TALENT SCHOLARSHIPS

THE JOHN HYLANDS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

In honour of our late Chairman of Governors, The John Hylands Memorial Scholarship is to be established in his memory. Initially a teacher who then trained as an actuary, John had a distinguished career becoming Finance Director of Standard Life. Upon leaving Standard Life John held a number of board appointments including Chairman of Ecclesiastical Insurance, BOC Pension Trustees, Scottish Widows, Lloyds Bank General Insurance and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. At the same time, he was a proactive Chairman of the College leading the board with great distinction.

PURPOSE OF THE SCHOLARSHIP

The purpose of the Scholarship is to offer a place in the Senior School at St Aloysius’ College for a pupil from a local primary or secondary school who displays an exceptional talent in Mathematics, but where the cost of school fees is a barrier to an academic independent education.  Depending on the amount raised, this could be to support a pupil for up to six years at the College. St Aloysius’ College has forged excellent links with local primary and secondary schools and this Scholarship would be promoted both through partner schools and in local Parishes.

THE GIFT OF A SCHOLARSHIP

Being able to empower young people to achieve those “greater things” first advocated by the College’s Jesuit founders, will ensure that they can make a positive impact on the world. The College’s Jesuit ethos is as important now as it was when the College was founded in 1859. Through the special method of teaching, the College is committed to both academic development and to forming "men and women for others" through its charitable projects.  The formation of our pupils is what will set them apart as they discover how their gifts can help others.
